In recent years, as the free-to-play (F2P) model has surged in popularity, notably with titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends, a prevalent notion has taken root within the industry: that “online games should be free.” This trend has significantly shaped player expectations and market dynamics.

However, Sloclap, the acclaimed developer behind the martial arts title Sifu, is taking a clear stance against this prevailing trend. With their upcoming 5v5 competitive soccer game, REMATCH, they are sticking to a premium $30 price tag, expressing notable confidence in their decision despite the market’s lean towards free offerings.

Sloclap’s Creative Director elaborated on this philosophy in a recent interview with PC Gamer, stating their belief that the success hinges on quality, not pricing model: “The key to commercial success is creating an exceptional game. I’ve never considered the free-to-play model.”

This perspective is strongly backed by recent market data.

Games like Helldivers 2 and Palworld, priced accessibly at around $30, have significantly outsold many higher-priced AAA titles. This clearly demonstrates that today’s players are increasingly inclined to pay for compelling quality content and perceive value, rather than simply opting for the most expensive options.

Analysts have keenly noted a notable shift in the fiercely competitive gaming landscape. AA studios are effectively beginning to challenge the dominance often held by free-to-play games. They are achieving this success through innovative unique designs and by committing to fair pricing models that resonate positively with consumers.

Building directly on the widespread positive reception of Sloclap’s critically acclaimed earlier title, Sifu, the upcoming game REMATCH is poised to be another success story for the segment of mid-budget games, potentially solidifying this encouraging trend in the industry.

The action-packed football game "REMATCH" is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms on June 19. Public testing will take place on April 18 and 19.
